At Shamrock guide srevice we offer both winter and summer run steelhead trips on the Cowlitz river. I think the best run is the bigger B run that starts in March and runs through April, these fish are bigger and more aggressive. If winter is not you're time of year we offer summer trips starting in late June to late August, nothing better than floating down the river in the summer sun catching fish!
We use several techniques to target both winter and summer fish, often one will out produce the other depending on the river conditions and the anglers in the boat. We will spend a better part of the day side-drifting down the long runs that the Cowlitz river is known for or we will switch over to bait divers and back troll through the holding water. Both are solid techniques that work well and allow you to actively cover water searching for fish.
